Horror Movie Flash Review: Insidious

During the month of October lots of people watch 30 or 31 horror movies, I even did that once. However, I’ve made a tradition of doing 13 horror movies for the month, and this year the tradition continues. My treat for you this time around, I will be doing brief reviews of all 13 movies that my fiance and I watch.

Number one this year is the first entry in the Insidious franchise…Insidious.

This James Wan directed movie may be the first installment of the franchise, but it actually takes place after the third and fourth installments. The time-line is wonky, but it all plays into the overall story told over the entire franchise.

The movie is about a boy, Dalton, who is able to astral project his soul into a dream plane called the further. Dalton's spirit becomes stuck in the further leaving his body in a comatose state. His parents, Josh and Renai, call upon the help of a psychic medium, Elise, who has a history with the family. It's revealed that Josh also had similar abilities when he was young, but for fear of what could happen to him, Josh's mother had Elise block his powers and all memories of what happened when he was in the further. We learn that the demon attacking Dalton, isn’t the only thing haunting him in the further. There is also a female ghost, a figure from Josh’s past. With Elise and her helper's assistance the family is able to recover Dalton's soul and banish the demon. Unbeknownst to Elise, the female ghost has taken over Josh’s body, and kills her.

It was a good movie with some good jump scares, but overall it wasn't scary or all that original. There were some of the trademark James Wan images and themes and they set up the sequel nicely, but all in all lots of it felt very formulaic.
